Not too long ago, someone commented in my journal with an icon that was a picture of Hitler with the caption, "My mommy chose life."  I banned the icon (it was the first time I'd ever deleted a comment, which caused a bit of angst for me because I'm just like that) and eventually the person who used it when they came back to be shitty because I'd made a public post supposedly 'shaming' them when all I was doing was essentially making a post for future reference - "Hey everyone, no Hitler or Nazi imagery of any type allowed here."

That's not what you've all had happen, heh.

No, what happened was I later realized that the icon was not just offensive, it was also WRONG.  Hitler's mommy didn't CHOOSE life.  Hitler's mommy had no choice in the matter whatsoever.  When Hitler was born in 1889, his mommy had basically no rights as a person.  She couldn't vote, let alone go and get abortion, and was generally defined by her role as 'Hitler's mommy' or 'Hitler's daddy's wife'.  She wasn't a person - she was a broodmare and broodmares don't get to choose whether or not they stay pregnant.

Using that icon as a dig at the Pro-Life crowd may get some surface attention, but it ignores the essential truth that Hilter's mommy was a woman and women don't get to make decisions about whether or not they have children.  Oh, we say they do now, but as I pointed out yesterday, with 87% of the counties in the US not having access to abortion providers, we really don't mean it.  At least not in the US or in other parts of the world where women are still chattel, which I believe comprises a greater percentage of the world's population than not.

I didn't get to tell the owner of that icon any of this because I didn't realize it until WAY after the fact and wow, does it suck thinking of the perfect comeback a month later (or however long it's been), but hey, at least I get to share it with all of you, :).

ETA: Hilter's mommy's name was Klara.  Thanks, [livejournal.com profile] darth_eldritch.
So I went through and deleted a bunch of my favorite icons, including my 'famous' one of Leela holding a knife.  After everything this past weekend, I just felt that I shouldn't have any icons that had any sort of violent imagery in them.  So no more icons with guns (bye, bye "Bisexual Fury") or wishing violence ("Basil Hopes You Die In A Fire") or implied violence ("John Casey Is Not Amused") of any kind.  I had 19 that I felt were inappropriate, which out of 230 wasn't that bad, but even so...  That's a lot of violent imagery for someone who claims to be a pacifist at heart, :(.

Also, Jon Stewart tonight was brilliant as always, reminding everyone not to look for blame.  When it's online I'll post a link, but basically he just pointed out that there will always be monsters.  It's how we deal with them that matters.

Thank You!

Hey, everyone, please go and check out the pretties that [livejournal.com profile] teamharkness  made for me over at [livejournal.com profile] torchwood_fest.

Also, if anyone knows how to add banners to my layout, I'd be eternally grateful if you could help me, :).

Thank you!

Pretties! )

So I finally changed my default userpic.  It came about because of a meme on facebook to change one's profile picture to a cartoon from childhood in the name of 'abuse survivors'.

Cut for abuse triggers and my further thoughts on the subject of changing a profile picture to change the world. )

Memes don't change the world.  People do.
And spent the day with my favorite aunt.  She took me to lunch at my favorite fast food place, Chick-Fil-A and we went to Home Depot, where I helped her buy a toilet (she's renovating my late grandmother's house in anticipation of moving up here).  I had a good day, overall.

Then I came home and found this on facebook:

Michigan Gay College Student Kills Himself

Don't get me wrong, really.  I wasn't expecting the world to magically become a better place because we all wore purple one day.

Or maybe I was.

Someone told me recently that I'm too outspoken on this issue, that I should stop telling people who aren't for gay rights to go fuck themselves, that my profile picture (which is the same on facebook as it is here) is too 'in your face' about it, that all I seem to talk about anymore is gay rights and that I'm alienating the people who might be 'on the fence' or who aren't anti-gay, but simply don't think about the issue.

I can tell you that lately I've found it wearing having this profile picture, because it is so very 'in your face' and sometimes I think I'd rather default to 'Molotov Cocktease', whom I dressed as for Halloween a couple of years ago, or the Fifth Doctor or something that doesn't have 'deeper meaning' or force people to think when they see it.

I'm not going to, though.  As Corey Jackson just proved, the lives of gay teens haven't gotten magically better just because we're talking about them now.  And they won't get better so long as people keep saying that they don't want to have to think about it all the time and that everything I post shouldn't be about gay rights.  Everything I post on facebook isn't about gay rights, but to this person it seemed that way and they basically told me that they don't really read my facebook anymore because of it, though I'm still on their friend's list.

Oh, well.

Heck, I discovered very recently that someone I'd known for years, whom I reconnected with at our 10 & 15-year HS reunions defriended me without a word, probably because of my stance on this issue and my in-your-face attitude about it.

Too bad.

I'm not going to stop talking about it and this will remain my default profile picture as long as I can stand it, though there may come a time when it is too much for me to think about every time I log in to here or facebook and I have to change it to something more... neutral.

But not today.

And not tomorrow.

Well, not homeless, obviously - they're on my hard drive!

However, I have no clue who made them and want to know so that I can credit if/when I start using them: [info]las - I know I got one of these from someone on your friends' list.  It's labeled, :). ETA - that one was found, :).

Any help that y'all can give me in figuring out where I got these would be greatly appreciated, :).  Thanks in advance!

You're Leela!

"Don't be such a savage," he says. Funny how those "savage" skills seem to come in so handy, huh? You don't have much of a taste for niceties; when you're faced with a sticky problem, you don't tiptoe around it, you pounce and make it beg for its life! The Doctor is appalled at what he sees as a barbarian, slash-and-burn mentality. What he's reluctant to acknowledge is that your hunter instincts also give you a sense of nuance that has saved the day more than once.
