thank goodness that despite all the crappy decisions made by those in power, there is the occasional breakthrough in commonsense and humanity ...

It sounds good but now comes the mental abuse and other things. I hope they do not treat these individuals the way they did black fighting men.

It will be discredited units, little training, the worst jobs, and mental abuse and trumped up charges.

Roll on Buffalo Solders, and the Red Ball Express.

GLBTQP soldiers have already been going through all of this, with blackmail added on for good measure, :(.

Repealing it will save them their jobs, but only time will tell what effect it has on their dignity.

A lot of people have been reacting to this far more strongly than I did - I just... couldn't. When I think of all the harm the policy has caused (there's a chance that 9/11 wouldn't have happened at all if they hadn't fired so many gay translators) and how many asshats dragged their feet, I'm almost too tired to celebrate, :(.

Don't get me wrong - it's a step forward. But a LOT more steps remain to be taken.

(a republican site: "I don't understand" I didn't even want to get into it trying to explain why it is important as a het who was thought as a lesbian, let alone for LGBTQP members.. They keep fretting about public showers, when public showers are mostly a thing of the past in the military. Note you well that none of these self proclaimed patriots have served any time. While one very snarky and very funny and smart liberal who often commented there served in Iraq.)

update on that republican site:
It is modded by a LGBTQP person who started giving her views on them matter. I added mine and now she feels better!

The public shower thing is made of dumb anyway - soldiers barely have time to wash themselves, let alone fantasize about anyone else, :(.

A lot of self-proclaimed patriots have never served, :(. I haven't, either, which is why I tend to yield to those who know better than I.

Yes, very true. But it's so pathetic about the homophobia there. (bootcamp sometimes had public showers- and it's my understanding that this has been phased out) But you have to be very careful about keeping your eyes to yourself or glance no lower than at someone else's face if look at anyone else at all.)

The homophobia in the service is just incredible.

Self proclaimed patriots - I mean that in the sense for those who happily support these damn wars without ever putting themselves on line.

Because our country was founded (and is still run by) repressive Puritan asshats.

Well, if you're going to redeem yourself for a really Baaaaad tax compromise, this is the way to do it! Yay! Indeed! Yeah, it took freakin' long enough, but it happened, and I am so overjoyed that our men and women in the service who are LGB no longer have to bite their tongues and be made to feel they are keeping some dirty little secret that will bring nothing but shame to them, their families, and the Good Ol' U.S. of A. Dear God, a SANE and even (dare we invoke this word? compassionate move right before they break for the holidays? This could set a dangerous precedent, you know: common sense and compassion coming into making political decisions? Where's the spirit of Jessie Helms when it'a needed, I ASK YOU???? :)

About damn time!

Now we need there to be a non-discrimination clause! Actually we need it implementing first :) But onwards!
