As a follow-up to my previous post which speaks of the child slavery associated with many of the more common chocolate brands, I thought I should offer some slavery-free alternatives.  Yes, these are a bit more expensive, but as chocolate is a luxury item anyway, I'd rather spend more on less of it than know that my Milky Ways (or Hershey bars or Three Musketeers) came from child slavery.

Happy Halloween! :)

I always find a weird dichotomy on this. My favourite chocolate ever is Yorkie bars (they of the 'not for girls'), so much so that my mum bought me about 20 for Christmas last year. And they are made by Nestlé and I have an international responsibility to not eat them. On the other hand, I live in York (where Yorkies are still made) and grew up in Halifax, where they employ a considerable proportion of the working populations, and they support my university both financially and by sending employees to work with students here and providing work placements. So do I support the end of child labour by not buying one, or do I support my local communities at a time when unemployment is at its highest level in a decade by buying as many as I can?

And then I remember that I only eat about half a dozen a year (discounting the years when Mum is stuck for gift ideas), and my purchasing decisions probably aren't making that much of a difference to anyone anywhere.
