87% of the counties in the United Fucking States of America lack an abortion provider.

87%

I just...

I give up.

Obviously, the religious extremists in this country have won and I should just accept my fate as a broodmare.

Neigh.

Oh, and I happen to live in one of the 13% of counties that actually has an abortion provider.  That doesn't make me feel anything but numb.

87%

Fuck me sideways.

It's a backward way of banning abortion. Have local governments throw up hurdles to stop clinics opening, harass those that do open, threaten them literally with death until they close down, picket them until the employees fear to work there - and you have a defacto ban on abortion even though it's legal under law

Especially for low income women who can't travel to those clinics that do exist

Exactly. Roe VS Wade may as well have not happened, for all the access to abortion that women in the US actually have, :(. It makes me sick that this was something that George Carlin was wrong about, :(. A couple of years before his death, he was on a panel and said it was a 'dead' issue and that no one would ever repeal R v W. Too bad that they don't have to - they can just intimidate it out of existence.

It makes me feel... dirty, almost, being a woman, knowing that my rights as an individual are so easily lost.

I had no idea it was so hard to come by. But then I managed to be chemically sterilized at 22 because of chemotherapy being my only chance of living to hit 23... and I'm now 41. Yay for surviving! Yay for likely not being able to have my own little knee-biter! There are plenty of others out there having munchkins, so I've never felt my having any was a Must Do, in spite of all those who told me I'd be a great mom, and really should have kids...! This told to me while I wasn't even dating a man. I asked if they planned to help raise this kid they wanted me to have, and they'd always say that, "Oh no! You'll find a man...!" Somehow forgetting that the divorce rate is more than 50%, and that I do not want to EVER end up raising a kid alone, only with a partner. (shakes head) Still, I've always been pro-choice, for those rare times when it's due to rape, or that the birth will kill either or both the mother and child... things like that. Was never sure I could live with having an abortion, but still wanted the choice, the option to be there.

See, this is not truly pro-choice to me. Pro-choice means you support a woman's right to choose no matter what her reasons are. Her body, her choice.

I'm not sure that I could live with having an abortion either, but if I'm a person and not chattel, I should have the freedom to choose to not bring another life into the world.
