It really was, :).

Sadly, they shared this on The Advocate's facebook page and there's a whole comment thread about how it's sexist and wrong for Takai to call him a doucebag because a) it refers to a primarily female function (never mind that enemas are a form of douching) and b) it's somehow 'sinking to McCance's level'.

Sigh.

I had to comment to argue that while it might be something primarily associated with women, it's not something that most of us *enjoy* doing and not only that, a douchebag is the tool, not the action and no one can deny that McCance is a tool, ;).

Douchebags are unsanitary. They don't actually clean the vagina, they're based on a sexist idea that the natural smell of the female genitals is bad, and they can cause yeast infections. I don't think it's sexist at all to call someone a douchebag.

I'd certainly never use one, :).

Thanks, :).

Some people get really upset about the strangest things.

Awesome! Although...I didn't quite understand the South American rentboy reference?

Basically, he's saying what a lot of people have been saying recently about those who are vehemently anti-gay. Namely, that they protest too much and are in fact, gay themselves.

Ah, I see. Well, I'm not a huge fan of that type of speculation, but I like his message of 'don't listen to the douchebags of the world'. Thanks for sharing :)

I try not to speculate in that way either, as it makes the implication that there's still something wrong with being gay, but there have been a TON of cases in recent years where vehemently anti-gay persons have come out as gay, :(.

That sort of self-loathing hurts my heart, especially since it comes from our society's deep and abiding feeling that being gay is somehow wrong or unnatural, :(.

Yeah, that's the same reason I don't like to speculate that way, because there isn't anything wrong with being gay.

'Lesbian' or 'lezzie' was a big insult that was said to me a lot in middle school and high school. I can't help thinking I might have realized that I was a lesbian sooner if it hadn't been used as such an insult.

I have to tell myself, usually on a daily basis, that there's nothing wrong with me being gay just because so much self-loathing was ingrained in me from school and religion. But even though I have times where I question myself, I NEVER EVER wish death on anybody. And even before I realized I was gay, I was always empathetic with people who identified as LGBTQ. I think I must have always recognized something like that in myself, even if it was just in my subconscious. And I've never believed that gays are going to hell, even if I am a Christian. That is just...no. I don't think so.

I've been trying to make RIII understand why using 'gay' to mean anything negative isn't cool, but it's slow going. He's very gay positive, but hard to change when it comes to language, :(.

It is hard. I've got some friends who know I am gay and accept me for it, and they still use expressions like 'that's so gay.' I even have some queer friends who say stuff like that sometimes. I think people just need to be more aware of what they are actually saying. And it doesn't help when you hear those same expressions in movies and on tv (I'm guessing on the tv thing, because I actually don't own a tv)

I work at a place that's sort of casually racist and homophobic, so I just have to let a lot slide, :(.

On TV, they had a campaign trying to stop people from using 'gay' as a negative, but too many people say that it's one of those cases where the language as evolved and they aren't (always) referring to homosexual people when they say it.
