So, um, hi!  *waves*

The good news is that about 5 months ago, I started working at a new place.  I may post more details under f-lock later, but suffice to say that the money, coworkers, and overall environment are now significantly better than they were.  In fact, it's exact the sort of place at which I envisioned working as I was finishing school.  Career-wise, while I wouldn't call myself completely settled, I do feel that I'm finally starting to reap the rewards of all the dues I've paid since March of 2011, which was when I finally bit the bullet and went back to school.

Here's the thing... At first, I was very busy after I started at the new place - learning the ropes, getting used to the hours, and generally learning the culture as one does when one is just starting a new job, which was my excuse for setting my writing aside for a time.

I also made a number of resolutions when I left my former place for this one, but one of the biggest was to keep my head down, avoid drama as much as possible, and not get too involved with my coworkers' lives.  This has served me well.

Very well, actually.  So well that my overall stress level has decreased considerably, which is awesome.

Except that apparently, I can't write when I'm happy.  So once again, the sequel to "The Perfect Storm" has stalled, which is, naturally, the bad news.  Well, that and the bridging chapter, the one that is absolutely essential in order for anything I've written that takes place after it make sense, is nearly 20,000 words of utter dogshit.  Thanks to beta reading, it's getting better, but for some reason, the words simply aren't there, the story doesn't flow, and I feel as though I'm leading the characters instead of the other way around, something that I've sworn from the beginning that I wouldn't do.

Long story short - I haven't forgotten, I haven't given up, but I'm really hoping that something terrible doesn't have to happen in order for my muse to return from where it seems to have retreated.

Thank you to everyone who's been so encouraging and patient - it means more to me than I can say.
Once again, lots of more important stuff going on, but I've found myself wanting to write in the last few weeks and just the other day had the epiphany that 80-100,000 words isn't going to be nearly enough.  The reason I've been having so much trouble is that I've been wanting to gloss things over than I've (FINALLY) realized just can't be glossed.

I have no clue what the final word count will be.  All I know is that what I have now is looking a lot more like a rough outline than the nearly-finished draft I thought I had.

As always, thanks to everyone for their patience and interest.  For what it's worth, I'm working very hard to make this worth the wait.
Hello, all!

I'm looking for someone to PLEASE beta my sequel to The Perfect Storm.

The plus is that you'd get to read it before everyone else.

The minus is that it's rough, really rough, and you'd be reading that before anyone else.   Even so, I think I've gotten it to a place where I can at least start to put the pieces I've written together into a coherent whole.  While in some ways the sequel is not as dark as its progenitor, there is what's essentially a 30,000-word, pretty heavy BDSM scene, as well as flashbacks, PTSD, references to rape and torture, and explicit violence.

With over 70,000 words in rough chunks written out, this is not a request for the faint of heart.  Some chapters and bridgework are essentially still a gleam in my eye, but they're a gleam I'd really like to get out of my head if at all possible.  In addition, if everything that needs to be written gets written, this could wind up being over 100,000 words very easily - it just depends on the feedback I get and how my muse responds to it.

I would prefer that any volunteers be familiar with The Perfect Storm and be willing to tell me where I'm going wrong in keeping with the spirit of that story.  The latter is very important to me, as this is still my baby and I'd like for her sister to be as well-cared-for as she was.

Thank you very much in advance for any and all volunteers.

Comments to this entry will be screened and any responses will be answered via PM or e-mail, as per the volunteer's request.

ETA: Wow, that was fast!  Thank you! :)
I've been writing again.  Not a lot, I've been reading more than writing, and the more I read, the more I realize that a lot of my sequel to "The Perfect Storm" is written - I just have to do bridgework.  Yes, I know I've said that before, but it's really true.

Cut for length and very minor spoilers for the sequel to "The Perfect Storm." )

Wish me luck.

1,000

Apr. 25th, 2012 08:36 pm
I've been saving up this entry, just because it felt like I should have something profound to say for number 1,000.  Then I really thought about it and realized that some entries are saved rough drafts of other entries, many are locked, and a bunch are simply where I had to split chapters of "The Perfect Storm."  Not to mention that with all of the posting I've done in other communities, I'm sure I passed 1,000 some time ago.

So the sequel to The Perfect Storm is what I've decided to write about.

I've been feeling some slight inspiration lately.  As I've mentioned several times before, I actually have around 60,000 words written in the form of various scenes that are essentially "day in the life" aspects of the story.  In other words, the format has changed drastically.  Not to mention that if I don't want to release this as a series of stories, each one somewhat loosely related and slowly building on the others, I'll need to write some serious bridgework.

I have 18 weeks left in school.  18 weeks with little-to-no time to write.  However, since I've felt stirrings from my long-absent Muse, I thought I'd give anyone who was still curious about what happened to Jack, Tosh, and Ianto after the last line was published a heads up that I may actually have something to give you before another year goes by, :).  As a reminder, where the sequel is concerned, I absolutely refuse to start posting until I'm done with it, simply because I don't want to make the same mistake twice.

Best wishes to everyone who followed the story, then and now.

Thank you for reading, :)!
[livejournal.com profile] sparkindarkness just posted an entry regarding the fetishization of gay men, especially that of a few well-known actors who've come out recently.  He also made me aware of this disgusting "You Know You're Addicted To Slash" meme, upon which I will now comment:

Cut for length and homophobia. )

Some of you might think I'm being hypocritical here because I both read and write slash (and I'll admit, the majority of what I read online is slash).

However.

When I write it, I try to treat the characters with respect, not as poseable fuck dolls.  And when I'm reading it, I stay away from authors who write nothing but stereotypes.  It's a fine line, perhaps, which is why I'm trying to stay on the correct side of it and not forget that I'm reading about people.  Fictional people, yes, but still - characterization is important.  Treating the subject matter with respect is important.  More than important - respect for what one is reading and writing is just basic human decency.

One final word on fetishization.  I'm a bisexual woman.  Men are very "accepting" of me and my sexuality.  Because they think it's "hot".  They could care less about me or any woman I might have sex with as people - all they care about is being allowed to watch.

If you care about the rights of BGLTQP people even when they aren't providing you with entertainment, you're someone I'd like to know and be around.  However, if you only think of us in terms of the entertainment we can provide to you - fuck off.
Right now, there are 20 of you who have me on their feeds whom I have not friended back.  For various reasons, I've been f-locking a lot of stuff lately, so if you'd like to read something other than my fiction, please leave a comment telling me you're over 18.  I don't need your actual age, just that you're old enough to read the silliness I post.

If you friended me for fiction, um...  I'm sorry?  I haven't been writing a lot of fiction lately because of school.  The ideas are percolating and once in a while something will find its way out, but for the most part, I'm just blogging, :).

In any case, if you'd like for us to be "mutual friends" (which also includes a link to my Facebook, where I post even MORE about politics), please just drop me a line and I'll add you back, :).

Thanks, :).
Well, kids, it's official:

My muse is on holiday.  Right now I owe 23,000 words in total for the $230 my bidders donated for flood relief.  The biggest chunk is a 20,000 word Perfect Storm sequel which I've started, but which right now is made of utter suck.  I know what I want to say and how I want it to go, but my fingers don't want to make the connection from my brain to the page.

I'm starting to wonder if my anti-anxiety medication isn't affecting my ability to write?  )
So do any of you have any ideas for jump-starting a stalled muse?  I'll take anything, :).
This is just an FYI for all of those who only wanted the fiction and instead got teleen, ;).

I realize that it's been a while since I've actually posted a story here, that lately it's been filled with politics and offline life stuff.  I also owe stories to several people, both from the flood relief auction and my holiday season offers.

All I can say is that several stories have roughs, they just aren't done yet.  In a couple of cases, I don't have confirmation and/or prompts, so I haven't started yet and finally, my muse has been on vacation.

Where she's gone is anyone's guess, but while she's been away, ideas have been percolating.  They just haven't had the bridge from my head to my fingers, :).

That said, I am still writing and thinking about stories, so the 'fiction' part of [livejournal.com profile] teleen_fiction  will eventually come back.  If you're bored with my ranting and only friended me for the porn, I don't mind if feel you need to de-friend me to keep the politics off your friends' list.  Consider this a 'feel free to drop me with no questions or complaints' card, :).

I may not cross-post every story to every community on LJ, but I do post them all to A Teaspoon and an Open Mind, so if you want to subscribe to me as an author there, that will ensure that you only get the porn and none of the extras.

No hard feelings, in any case and happy reading! :)
Since I can't buy you all gifts (no matter how much I'd love to), I'm going to write ficlets instead.

Please use the Prompt Me, Please guidelines (which have been expanded) and I'd really love it if you prompted me there instead of here.  In fact, I'm going to be horrible and disable comments on this post so that all comments go there instead of here, :).

Note: Those who have already been promised ficlets in the past are first in line for this (I think I still owe about half a dozen).

Happy Holidays, everyone - I'll look forward to writing, :).

The first thing I want to do here is thank my beta, [livejournal.com profile] frakkin_addict.  Without her, this still would have been written, because it was my Monster!bunny that was eating my brain, but it would not have been something that I would have been proud to have other people read.  She's been with me literally since I started writing it, (which happened while I was still trying to finish "Legacy of the Bad Wolf", another story that wouldn't have been finished without her) and I honestly can't begin to express how much her always-constructive criticism, support and help have meant to me.

It hardly seems possible, but we've finally reached the end.  Yes, there will be a sequel (I've written around 60,000 words on it already, but it's still in its infancy) and unlike with this book, I will not start posting until I'm absolutely certain that I have an ending that pleases me.

What follows are the statistics of The Perfect Storm, recorded because it makes my HFA brain happy to do so, as well as some of my thoughts and feelings while writing it.  )

Thank you for everything.

Beverly

ETA:  Just as an FYI - there is no way to only screen part of a comment, :).  If you put your e-mail address in a comment, the whole comment will remain screened to protect your privacy, :).

ETA 2: Since there was a request, I'm going to put the end notes at the end of the PDF, :).
Saw this on [livejournal.com profile] wendymr's journal and it just looked cool, so I ganked.

Pick a paragraph (or any passage less than 500 words) from any fanfic I've written, and comment to this post with that selection. I will then give you a DVD commentary on that snippet: what I was thinking when I wrote it, why I wrote it in the first place, what's going on in the character's heads, why I chose certain words, what this moment means in the context of the rest of the fic, lots of awful puns, and anything else that you'd expect to find on a DVD commentary track.

Bonus points to those who pick fics that are less than 500 words, as you'll get the entire process of the fic, :).    Actually, pick anything - this just sounds cool and since it might even get my creative juices flowing, if you like my writing and want to see more, have at!

I further promise that I haven't forgotten.  I've just been a little down lately and not writing much.  When I'm back on my upswing, it will be written, :).

Thanks to everyone who's prompted me for various reasons lately - I really like writing those ficlets when my brain lets me, :).
[Error: unknown template qotd]

Yes, it is a fundamental human right.  I've expounded pretty thoroughly on this subject already, but the short answer is that human beings should have the right to do as they please with their own bodies.

Restrictions - the short answer is no, there shouldn't be any, for no matter how cool it sounds to make people get licenses before they breed or sterilize child abusers, it's a slippery slope that I, for one, don't want to start down the path of.

People have a right to breed.  Period.
Believe it or not, I've almost run out of prompts, :).  So if you missed this, please head on over and give me one, :).

To date, I've posted 15 ficlets for this challenge specifically (16 since it started), have two more sitting on my Desktop that will be posted when I'm more awake, and have about six or eight still waiting in the wings.  If that sounds like a lot still to be done, keep in mind that I've written 18 total just since August 29.

Moral of the story: I like writing ficlets.  I like getting prompts for ficlets.  I'm not quite tired of this yet, so taking advantage of me while you have the chance is to the good.  Honestly, I'm seriously considering making the original post a permanent one on my journal so that anyone can participate, but we'll see, :).

Please keep in mind, if I've already written one for you, I'll let you give me another one, but your prompt automatically moves to the back of the line until I'm done with all of the others, :).  Still, if you don't mind waiting, feel free to give me another, :).

If I've told you that your prompt is eating my brain and will take longer, feel free to give me an 'easier' one (generally one word is easy - more than one word is hard, heh).  I'll still attempt to do the original, but this will give you something now if you don't want to wait, :).

And for those who are curious, a new chapter of The Perfect Storm WILL be posted this weekend.  It's complete and beta'd - I just need to find the time to do all of the cross-posting.

The ficlets have also been helping me to get the creative juices flowing for me to finally write the end, :).  To all those who've been so great and patience with my lax posting of late, I can only say thank you, :).  And offer a ficlet for being so nice to me, :).
If you missed this, I'm still taking prompts, :).

I've published nine ficlets so far (and have about five more oustanding), but I'm still having fun and willing to do more! :)  Still, I'm thinking that this will be the last time I do an update like this, so if you were shy about asking before, now's your chance, :)!

If you want to participate, please just read the rules first and keep in mind that it will probably be a little while before you see your ficlet.

Then again, if it's an 'easy' prompt, you might see it sooner, ;).  Easy is defined as something that my muse likes, so there's no way to know in advance if yours is easy or difficult, :).

In any case, have fun and happy reading! :)
If you missed this, I'm still taking prompts, :).  At this point, I have quite a few, but I can always have a few more, :).

If you want to participate, please just read the rules first and keep in mind that it will probably be a little while before you see your ficlet.

Stolen from [livejournal.com profile] wendymr, because I love writing drabbles & ficlets, too and because my bibliography isn't long enough to do the "Stump the Writer" Meme, :).

Rules:

1) Doctor Who or Torchwood, though I will crossover if I'm familiar with the show.
2) Jack/anyone, slash, het or gen.  Literally anyone, so long as they are sentient (so no getting cute and asking for Myfanwy, ;)), though if I loathe the character I reserve the right to ask for someone else.
3) Simple prompts only, please.  When I say simple, I mean one, two or three-word prompts like: "Rain", "Longing"... You get the idea, :).  More complex prompts turn into bunnies that breed and take over my brain.  So keep it simple, for I am simple, :).
4) I reserve the right to stop doing this at any time.  I also reserve the right to ask for a different prompt if the one you give me eats my brain.
ETA 5) If you give me more than one, I'll pick one of them to do and will reserve the right to do or disregard any others, :).
ETA - All stories will be posted in the order in which I was prompted, :).
ETA - Effective 9/13/2010, this is now a permanent challenge on my journal.  If you give me a prompt per the guidelines above, I'll try to write it for you, :).

ETA for Yuletide 11/18/10: If you want Rose, Gwen or Owen, I'll only write a gen fic.  My apologies, but I don't see these characters in a romantic/sexual way, so I'll only write them in friendship roles.  Everyone else is fair game.  Also, I'll pair Jack with certain characters from other fandoms as well.  For example, I'd be willing to do X-Files Jack/Krycek, HP Jack/Snape or Jack/Weasley Twins (which is the ONLY incest I'll do), Sherlock Jack/Holmes or maybe Jack/Holmes/Watson in a pinch, White Collar Jack/Neal (which is currently owed - I haven't forgotten), Fringe Jack/Peter.  If there's a character that you'd love to see Jack paired with that I haven't mentioned, please just ask - I might be willing to write it, :).  (No Glee, please, sorry.)

Also, please keep in mind that I'm an atheist, so while I'm willing to do holiday-related fic (and indeed, will be putting up a Christmas tree of my own), I won't be sending any characters to church, nor will I be overly focused on any "deeper meaning" to the season other than, "Peace on Earth, goodwill towards men."   I apologize if anyone finds this offensive, but it's because I don't want to offend anyone that I wanted to make this absolutely clear.

Have fun and thanks in advance, :).
